It’s Confirmed. Cadets at West Point are still Issued the Times
I sent an email to the Superintendent of West Point a few weeks ago inquiring about whether the New York Times is still being issued to the cadets (at taxpayer expense) as it was when my son was a cadet and I finally received a response today.
Dear Ms. Donoho:
Thank you for your recent e-mail to the Superintendent concerning the subscriptions to the New York Times.
The Times, as a newspaper of record, has generally been a good choice and carries far more international coverage then most other papers. The fact that cadets may frequently disagree with its perspective leads to learning to read it critically and argue for or against some editorial positions.
Additionally, the access that cadets have to all different media from the internet, along with classroom discussion exposes them to much more than just the paper that is delivered to them.
The Academy is currently studying alternatives concerning media exposure and will use that study to determine any feasible and effective options to the New York Times delivery.
Thank you for your candid comments and for your continued interest in West Point.
Sincerely,
Deborah DeGraw

What can one say? Why not at least give them something to balance the Times, too? I get that they want them to be informed and up-to-date on news, but the Times has become so . . . awful.

It has. Another thing that is sad in my opinion (which my husband pointed out to me) is that the West Point Public Affairs office used to be run by actual military, not civilians. It may seem to be an unimportant thing but now we have an "us" vs "them" situation. If you look at the link the office is headed by a Lt. Col. and there is a Sgt. and a Major but that is all there is of the military at the United States Military Academy. A legacy of Clinton.

Think about it! If we are so concerned that somehow these cadets will be "brainwashed" or politically "skewed" by the Times editorial and reportorial stands than it will only prove Kerry's proposition. I believe our cadets, plebes and air cadets could have read Pravda in the 70's and watch Al-Jazeera today and still be able to discern BS and un-American values being propagated. I say have the NYT free and our kids reading it shows how well educated and fine-tuned mentally they really are.

You have a point. I just don't like the idea that the New York Times is profiting from the military while at the same time they report every piece of bad news about the military. They have an obvious bias against the military. Might as well call them the San Francisco New York Times.

No, really, I can’t blog today…...
I know I say almost every day that I can’t blog because I have a pressing deadline on a book…
It happens to be the truth, and because every day I say that I can’t blog and then commence many hours of blogging and ‘net surfing, I...
