Was it Wrong to Monitor U.S. Citizens Making International Calls?
Judicial oversight was involved in the NSA’s monitoring of suspected terrorists since September 11th, 2001 although you wouldn’t know that fact if you read the anti-Bush New York Times. According to Lucianne President Bush will be addressing the nation on Sunday night at 9:00 P.M.
It’s odd. Six years ago when we were stationed at Fort Sill, OK we got an unbelievable phone bill with over one thousand dollars of long distance charges. It turns out that someone had stolen our daughter’s phone card number when she was in the airport at Detroit, Michigan making a phone call home to us.
Calls were made to middle eastern countries and to places like Algeria, and Pakistan.
Now, if we had been monitored by the NSA it would most likely have been easier to discover who made those calls. As it was we ended up not having to pay for the charges (thankfully) but I remember asking the phone company to call the FBI to report the strange calls. We were told that they would just write it off. Unbelievable.
This happened a year before 911 and I wondered later if somehow the calls were made by terrorists. We will never know I suppose but I don’t have a problem with the NSA monitoring phone calls made by suspicious persons. I don’t have anything to hide.
Scott Ott’s post explains what is going on.
